The international conference Use and Misuse of Historical Narratives: Local Expressions, Global Connections, held in Sarajevo on 12-13 November 2025 and organized by the Norwegian Centre for Holocaust and Minority Studies, gathered researchers and practitioners from across the world to examine how historical narratives are used—and misused—in contemporary socio-political contexts. The event offered interdisciplinary perspectives from the fields of history, the arts, minority studies, peace pedagogies, and education. Participants discussed best practices for countering hate speech and for strengthening historical awareness, peace values, and democratic citizenship.

Two members of the Peace Education Hub took part in the programme. Melisa Forić Plasto presented her research titled Srebrenica Genocide in History Textbooks of Bosnia and Herzegovina, while Lejla Mulalić delivered a presentation titled Learning from Conflict: Teaching Northern Ireland’s Troubles in a Bosnian Context. Their contributions highlighted the importance of critical historical understanding and context-sensitive pedagogies in societies emerging from conflict.
